Where the past few weeks have gone

Both images were rendered with Mental Ray in Maya, and have normal maps applied. All of the high-res work was done in ZBrush (colour maps included) but I'm having some difficulty getting the level of detail in the normal maps to come through in Maya. Aside from that, the rigging is more or less complete, with IK Dynamic Hairs for the majority of the tentacles, IK/FK switching for all, as well as all 6 limbs (4 arms, 2 legs), blendshapes, muscle deformers (using clusters) etc. I will have to get a few playblasts of all of that online soon as well as a quick bit of animation. Gotta run...

Alien Model (with collisions?)

Lately, I've been wanting to do more extensive rigging. So, heres a model I'm almost finished that I've been working on and off on for the past few days.

Why is its tentacles up you might be axin'. Well I'll tell ya: I'm not sure how I'm going to rig them yet. Its a choice of either IK/FK controls or dynamics and hair/fur systems. I can always set something up to switch between the two (four) options, but I'll have to figure out how to do that. Heres the character model sheet I drew up

This is the full dog rig. My new demo just shows hi-lights of the rig but this shows all of the controls including IK/FK switching and blend shapes. Once again, I'll point out that the initial model was done by Trevor Ko, I just added a mouth to it before I rigged it.

Like I said, the modeling of the dog in the 'dog rig' wasn't entirely done by me; it was started by a co-worker/friend of mine (Trevor Ko) and tweaked to have a mouth and eyes by me before I rigged it. Going into this kind of rigging was pretty fun, and I plan on doing some more full character rigs and hopefully teaching myself some new stuff too

Recently, I was working for IMAX on the upcoming Harry Potter movie. We were up-converting it from 2D to 3D until we ran out of time. But enough of that, heres a fancy rig I did while I had some free time there!!

Finally... the Robo-Ball rendering is complete and I've put together a new Demo Reel that includes the Robo-Ball as well as some 2-D work that has been on here.

Of course, there's the ussual bit about how I don't own rights to any music, or the design for the Romulan Valdore-Class B.O.P and that I DID NOT design the Robo-Ball or all of the Dex Hamilton BG's. Everything else, was tackled solely by me.

Tattoo Design

A friend recently approached me to create a tattoo design based off a Romulan Valdore-Class Bird of Prey from the Star Trek TNG movie: Nemesis. I was originally going to do the whole thing traditionally and just do some minor changes in photoshit, but I decided to do all the painting digitally instead; its slightly easier, even if my computer loses plenty of respect from the workload.

Turned out pretty well, although I would like to do a traditional marker render of it. For obvious reasons I guess I should state that I don't own any rights to the design, all I did was just change the angle of some of the designs found online, did my own line-art and coloured it.

Update: My computer DID infact crash on me last week; the HD stopped engaging. I've sinse had a new one installed, along with the OS and all the programs I need for now. I'm continuing to render the Roboball before I do much else system wise. I may be able to recover the files that were on the old HD, although there may be a large price attached to that.

2nd Update: Did a final Classic Render for the friend who 'commissioned' this piece to me.

Fleet expansion, a picture for Opeth and Human Cordiceps

For the past few days, I have been doing some conference work at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Its terribly boring work for the most part, but it gave me plenty of drawing/seeping time.

Here are some designs for a previous alien race's fleet. I included the roughs which have some explanation of what the designs include. I'm not an astrophysicist by any means, so these diagrams may mean absolute bub-kiss. Then again, who knows

Onto the more obscure; I started this drawing quite a while ago and finally sat down to fully render the whole page. It didnt turn out quite as well as I'd hoped after it was scanned. Still looks good on paper.

Note: I really fudged the design for the 'Opeth' insignia.

Lastly, an idea ive been muddling around; human cordiceps. In an episode of the BBC series 'Planet Earth' (or as called in America, 'Oprah Winfrey Presents: Life') they take a journey to the Amazon Rainforest. In it, there exists a kind of fungus known by the genus cordiceps. Basically, they are a kind of fungus that attack insects, rendering them under the fungus' spores control. The zombified insect then acts rather peculiarly untill it reaches its destined goal, now assigned by the fungal spores. Once there, it shuts down and a new fungal growth sprouts from the insects body.

Awsome, morbid stuff.

One really neat thing to note is that it attacks very specific types of insects, and there is a different cordicep for each species. Some ants will even carry off the infected to a remote area once symptoms of the cordiceps have been detected to avoid the entire colony becoming infected.

Canoe Paddle Blade Designs

Recently, my father finished work on whats called a 'Deep Water' canoe paddle. He then "comissioned" me to create some designs for the blade. I had originally thought of something that would have a fairly strong eqyptian theme tied in with whatever other influences he wanted. In the end, the pieces were more influenced by Native American artwork. They work well with the paddle and with each other.

Unfortunetaly, those shots are a little blurry. To clarify, here are the original designs done in ink and marker. Some of the designs are extra ones that I considered, or variations on the final designs.

Devin Townsend

I haven't posted any café sketches for a while because I stopped seeing the point as they seemed really unfinished. I'm making an exception in this case because its a drawing of Devin Townsend. I got the chance to meet with him last night after his show with (in order of who played) Scale The Summit (who I had never heard before, but enjoyed), The Devin Townsend Project (I'm assuming thats the name they're going with these days), Cynic and Between the Buried and Me. His set was great and his stage performance was... well, very present. Its just great to see performers of any artistic industry who can have alot of fun, especially while maintaining their integrity in that field. Bottom line, the guys bloody entertaining. So, heres the drawing complete with his (and my) signature. I told him that I'd let him have a copy so I figured I'd sign it as well, incase it ends up being worth something one day.

Now, to figure out Twitter as thats how he preferred to be contacted.

New Layouts and a Bust for a friend

First up, a few new layouts I recently completed as part of another possible ongoing 3-D layout.

This first image was the first concept I thought up and I used one of the ships as a quick photoshop paint test. This is the final composition with more humanoid characters.

The second layout consists of an alien protagonist as well as other humanoid and alien antagonists. The beings attacking both the human and alien Protagonist is meant to be parasitic. In this case, the humans and the aliens are both fighting off the parasite that attacks, infects and takes control of the host body.

Up next are a few shots of a bust of the 90's cartoon Batman I did for a friend. It was sculpted out of wire, aluminum foil and Super Sculpy.

Then, it was baked, sanded down and finally painted.

I guess for legal reasons I should state that I obviously don't own any rights to Batman, nor do I plan on making any money on this, its a bloody birthday present. Some fat-cats in the US own all that stuff

From top to bottom, we have a classicaly rendered drawing of a ship I designed for another 2D layout I'm working on. No computers were used in the creation of this drawing and render aside from scanning and cropping the image. There were no rulers either surprisingly enough.

Next is a flop of the old-school render; it was drawn traditionally and then scanned and painted in photoshop. Its a fairly rough design and its nothing too creative, just a quick first rough pass.

Onto more realistic things. This next drawing is a rough ink drawing of a large Buddha at the ROM as well as two other designs of Egyptian Re-Animators (based upon the imagery presented by the band Nile's "The Essential Salts")

And finally, onto the Body Worlds drawings: from top to bottom we have the archer (the same one seen in some ads for Body Worlds). I did this as one large drawing on 14X17 and brought it into photoshop to better seperate the muscle groups from the tendons/ligaments. After that, is a gesture of the same piece (Body Worlds seemed more like works of art rather than anatomical presentations) and then two other drawings of a man that had skin still on it (a rarity at this event) and a woman holding a ball from a trapeze poll.

This is a sketch I did to better illustrate my thoughts on Nile's song "The Essential Salts". It depicts three Necromancers of Giza as part of the cult of re-animators over a body ready to be brought back to life. The hood ornaments are based upon Egyptian Gods and are in half skeletal and flesh form. The garb is completely made up and the entire image is very loosely based upon Egyptian drawings and folklore.

Hey all. I finally got around to watermarking some logo designs I did for a neighbor and friend's band called (as if it weren't already obvious) "State Of Mind". I collaborated with frontman and vocalist Dan Warry-Smith (I know he's the vocalist, so Dan if I missed anything let me know) and together we came up with some unique and I'd say interesting logo designs. Zoo Trip: Summer 2009

That little triangle on the Rhino was actually a bird that sat first on his back like ive drawn, then on his larger horn, facing him where they had a staring competition for a while. Unfortunetaly the Rhino left view after I had drawn him for a bit so this is fairly incomplete and knowing me thats the way itll stay

I'm not actually sure if that Rhino is a male or not. Anyone have a clue?

I decided to try and minimize the ammount of shaders/textures I would have to make for the strutts by making them as a group and shading them randomly. Theres still alot of tweeking left to be done and the lighting really doesnt help. I don't want to start using more dynamic lights untill all of the new Geo is in the scene and they're all properly textured. More to come...

Tunnel Test Renders

I've been keeping myself overly burdened and busy with the re-doing of the tunnel from my previous demo reel. This time around, I actually know what to do so I've been attempting to do it correctly.

The tunnel, even just for this shot, had to be broken into 8 pieces so that I could properly UV and texture them. There are still a few things that need tweaking and obviously theres alot of detail missing from the shots (beams, clutter, tools, rocks etc) but I found that the end result of the tunnel so far already looks far better than the old tunnel. I've also been playing around with depth of field. We'll see if I keep it though.

This is something I was working on over the past summer. I finished it sometime around July but never got around to posting it, probably because it was supposed to go up with some other things I'm still working away at.

As you can see, it looks pretty evil; theres alot more to it then that, but I don't really remember all of it and I would rather not spoil the 'surprise'. I wouldn't call this finished, but I would say I'm done working on it, mainly because I've deemed other things I'm working on right now more important.

Dex Backgrounds

Well, been away for a while again, this time actually working.
The images below are all from working on a show called Dex Hamilton: Alien Entomologist. I did these during my time at March Entertainment for about four months. It was nice stepping away from 3D for a while, although I did occasionally miss it.

All of these images have been placed in the order of their rough copies to the clean versions, omitting a few that didn't have much for the rough stage. None of THESE clean layouts were actually used, they were based off of the roughs. The original cleans are property of March Entertainment, I just re-did my own cleans from my original roughs.

All of these will be included in my new demo reel (once I can get Final Cut working, or cave and use Premiere again) and there is also a multi-plane pan en route. Stay tuned..

No blog is complete without Dax.

These two renders are both from the Victorian House. The first is from the dining room. The pictures play into the back-story I wrote up quickly for the house and one of them is actually a photoshopped rendition of a classmate of mine.

The second render is from the main hallway when you first enter the house. I liked this shot because of the cabinet in the foreground and the perspective made from the hallway walls. Aside from that, I liked how the textures turned out.. not crazy about the lighting though.. oh well. I'm a modeler, so thats just icing to me.

This is the Victorian House I modeled for my demo reel. Unfortunately, this doesn't include the nice flashes followed by full renders like the DVD does, its just the occlusion pass. I got so fed up with rendering that I caved and just went with this instead. This was actually an on-going project that I started as an assignment in first semester. I liked it so much, that I developed a back story to it and the basement soon followed. It takes after a Resident Evil-like story line.

These are the two tunnel (or basement) environments. They had to be broken into two clips for several reason mainly to do with rendering but in the end I found a few ways around any problems that arose. This was also a good chance to try some varied modeling in Maya. I was able to make the Lab almost entirely out of NURBS and a few things out of SubD's.

Here he is, and he's also cybernetic. The typical, barbaric Cyclopse wasent working out too well for me, so I kinda went with the Cyber-suit idea like MGS.

As you can probably tell, I cheaped out on his legs a lil... at first, but i think I'll stick with the skirt on this one, I figure its made of a trench-coat/rain resistant polyurethane material (specific eh?) that stretches... or maybe thats actually his body? who knows...

This is the final composition I have been working on recently. It is strictly a portfolio piece, not for school. The actual dimension for it is roughly 14"x34".

These two are both from first year and are sections of warp pans. The first is a Pirate Ship with the ANIM layer incorperated with the BG and the second is part of a Wizard Workshop BG.
